We provided Sleep Pods for them both so they could stay warm and dry. They were able to have showers, wash their clothes, store their belongings safely in a locker, and were given food and space to rest while they continued searching for housing.

They slept rough in Bishop Auckland for around a week while under our support. Each day during our opening hours, they came in to use the facilities, having a shower, washing their things, and taking time out from the cold.

We’re pleased to share that they have now been housed in the private rented sector. They returned their Sleep Pods and chose items from our Preloved furniture Shop to help them move in and start their new life.

When we asked for feedback about the Sleep Pods, they said:

“An absolute godsend. The only thing I would change is for the door to be more secure as it did blow open.”

This couple were rough sleeping during Storm Amy, which is extreme circumstances and we value all feedback so we can keep improving the support we offer, anything relating to the Sleep Pods is shared with SleepPod HQ, who are always keen to hear how they can develop this amazing emergency aid for rough sleeping.

We encourage everyone who uses a Sleep Pod to return it to us (or to the organisation it came from), no matter what condition it’s in. This helps us know that the person is now safely housed and allows us to prepare it for someone else in need.

If you ever see a Sleep Pod in the community, please let us know so we can check on it, monitor if it’s in use, or collect it when it’s no longer needed.

As we head into the colder months, we’re getting ready to help anyone who needs it. One individual in Bishop Auckland has returned their Sleep Pod after being safely housed — a powerful moment made possible by the dedicated support of our North East Hub, Cornerstone Supported Housing and Counselling, working alongside Sadler House and Durham County Council.

After nearly two years on the streets, they’re now settling into a new home and a new chapter.

Sleep Pods are not a long-term solution — but they provide shelter from the cold, a little dignity, and breathing space. That space allows people to connect with outreach teams, engage with support services, and begin moving forward.

We have recently brought you stories of the growing demand for Sleep Pods beyond the UK. Alongside Portugal and Germany we have supplied a number of Sleep Pods to an organisation that is working in Ukraine.

As winter continues to bring very harsh conditions out there, we are providing Sleep Pods to those facing extreme cold in Ukraine. These emergency shelters offer vital warmth and protection for people in desperate situations.

The pods have been sent mainly to medics working in frontline areas, helping them get the rest they need to continue their vital work. Others will go to injured individuals who may be waiting for help in freezing conditions. We’ve heard firsthand how much of a difference these pods can make, and we are grateful to be able to offer even a small measure of comfort in such difficult circumstances. In the video one of the volunteer medics explains how they have helped.

Thank you to everyone who supports Sleep Pod—you are helping to bring warmth and dignity to those who need it most.

Another amazing partnership, this time in Germany, has developed this year with the fantastic team at Kältebus Oldenburg . The team there now have a supply of Sleep Pods to give out during their regular outreach work where they supply warm food and drinks, blankets and warm clothes to the homeless in Oldenburg. A HUUUUUUGE Sleep Pod thank you to Lars and the team at Johanniter International Assistance and @jhgoldenburg for reaching out and working with us to get these out on the streets of Oldenburg. As you can see from the image below (source OECD) Germany might have a lower rate of homelessness per 10,000 people than the UK but it has a higher number of rough sleepers, along with Portugal where we also supply Sleep Pods.

The team at Oldenburg told us ”They are distributed by the helpers from the Johanniter cold bus under the direction of Jörg Bohlken. The first ones have already been handed out and the first candidate hugged him straight away. Everyone was very happy and very grateful.”

The initiative also had a full page article in their local newspaper. We hope that this is just the start of an ongoing partnership in the fight against Homelessness across Europe.

This is Michael and he told our Distribution Partners his life has just changed for the better now that he will be dry and warm. He has been concerned about the up coming low temperatures. He sleeps by the Leeds Playhouse under a canopy. These are only a few of the 100’s of Sleep Pods we have recently distributed and we will continue getting them out to those who need them most over the winter.

Last night, we did a role reversal on the coldest night of the year! While we opened our doors to rough sleepers, our incredible staff and volunteers slept rough using Sleeppods to raise awareness. Our goal? Zero rough sleepers on the streets of Hartlepool and we achieved it!

A massive thank you to all our teams and volunteers who gave their time and effort voluntarily, with no funding. Your dedication truly made a difference! Our homeless hub has just closed for the day but is open 6 days a week for anyone in need, and it’s all run without any financial support.

Meet Aiden, one of the many individuals whose life has been transformed by Cornerstone Supported Housing and Counselling

Aiden’s journey is truly inspiring. After battling addiction for 20 years and facing time in prison, he found himself sleeping rough. The homeless response team encountered Aiden and supported him through their housing pathway, from emergency accommodation to securing his own property. Reflecting on his experience, Aiden says, “The support I got was amazing, and I can’t thank Cornerstone enough and am now 10 months clean. I started volunteering for them in November 2023, got employed in April. I love my job, have gained valuable experience, and can now help people who are in the situation I was in. There’s nothing better than being able to take someone off the streets and help them get accommodation.”
